Big link energy

Chubbies has been selling the weekend since 2011, measured in inseams and named like an inside joke, from The Domingos Are For Flamingos to The Khakinators. We built a preview card for every page type, home, category and product, in their teal and their type, each one drawn live from whatever that page is selling when the link goes out.

Paste any chubbiesshorts.com link, a pair of trunks or a whole category, and watch its card get built from that page.

Chubbies sells one thing across its catalog, and it is not really shorts. It is Friday at five, photographed on a boat, priced by inseam, and named by whoever was in the room. Prints land and sell through in days, and the storefront keeps up with every one of them.

So we built the previews to keep up too, one card per page type: the wordmark and teal utility bar for the front door, the category name over six of that category’s own product shots in a teal band, and on each product page the real name, price and description beside the hero photo full-bleed on the right.

Each card is drawn at the moment the link is shared, from the page being shared, so a print that goes up on a Tuesday is in the preview on Tuesday.

The Chubbies look

Chubbies website

Chubbies started in 2011 selling men's shorts by inseam, and the range now runs from the 4-inch classics through swim trunks, everywear shorts, tops and kids, across 1,482 products and 997 categories. The company is based in San Francisco and sits inside Solo Brands, and the shorts are stocked at REI as well as sold direct. The storefront is loud on purpose and consistent to the pixel: one geometric grotesque doing every job, headlines in heavy all caps, product names in title case because those are the punchline, a teal that shows up in the theme colour, the utility bar and the category headers, and product cut-outs sitting on light grey tiles. The script wordmark is the one soft thing on the page. We drew the cards from those parts, so a Chubbies link looks like Chubbies before anyone reads it.

What we built

We matched their masthead on white: the pineapple-and-script wordmark centered at the size their header uses, with the teal utility bar along the bottom carrying CHUBBIESSHORTS.COM, which is where that bar sits on their site. No headline under the mark, because the homepage title is SEO boilerplate that would just say the brand name twice. The card pulls the wordmark out of their header rather than shipping a flat PNG, and the same layout carries content pages with the logo up top and the page title in teal in the white field between the mark and the bar.

What we built

Our card takes the teal header band straight off the category page, sets the category name and its line in it, and runs the first six product shots from that category’s own grid underneath, keyed by product so a second angle of the same pair can’t take two tiles. That category already carries its own lifestyle portrait, a guy in pink turtle trunks taking a hose to a slip-and-slide at 1219 by 1872; the card shows the category name and six of its own product shots instead. Chubbies streams that grid in after the page loads on some categories, so when six shots aren’t there to take the card drops the strip and gives the category the full teal panel rather than stretching four across six columns.

What we built

Our card puts the trunk photo full-bleed on the right, a 900 by 1200 shot on white pulled straight off the page, and gives the left half to what a shopper is reading on the PDP: the name in title case the way the page prints it, the description, and the price. The name is the one Chubbies gave the product rather than the one in the URL, because those disagree more often than you would think, and it steps down through four sizes so The Domingos Are For Flamingos keeps its flamingos. Products photographed without a shot get the flat teal panel and the white wordmark instead of an empty box, and there is no stock or sale badge on any of it, because their per-size stock data would call a buyable pair sold out.

Every link dressed for the weekend.

We render a live share image for Chubbies in their teal and their type, so every pair and every category can get a card that redraws itself as prints drop and inseams sell through, with nothing to keep up by hand.
